| Fluoride prophy paste | commercially prepare pastes with fluoride |
| Silex | fairly abrasive, used for heavy stains |
| Zirconium silicate | highly effective, does not abrade tooth enamel. good for gold, exposed dentin and tooth colored restorations |
| Air Polishing - sodium bicarbonate | handpiece w/ nozzle that delivers a slurry of warm water and sodium bicarbonate |
| Tin oxide | metal polishing pasted, used for amalgam and other metal restorations |
| Superfine Silex | light stains |
| Flour of pumice | volcanic glass; enamel, gold foil, amalgam, acrylic denture bases |
| Fine pumice | mildly abrasive; persistent stains (tobacco) |
| Bristle brushes | removes stains from deep pits and fissures of the enamel. can cause cuts in the gingivae. not used on exposed cementum or dentin |
| Chalk; whiting | calcium carbonate |

| Dental tape | wide thread similar to floss, composed of fine fibers - used unwaxed when polishing interproximal surfaces |
