Genetics Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Heredity The passing of traits from parent to offspring
Genetics The study of heredity
Gregor Mendel Known as the father of Genetics, he studied heredity of pea plants and how traits are passed from one generation to another
Homozygous (purebred) -If both alleles are the same, the organism is homozygous, or purebred, for that trait. - Example: LL, bb, AA
Trait Physical characteristics of an organism
Alleles - Different forms of a gene - Example: tall stem/short stem, purple flower/white flower
Genotype -Its genetic makeup. Genotype is shown with two letters. - Example: Gg, gg, GG
Phenotye -An organisms physical appearance. (These are things we can see with our eyes) - Example: white fur/dark fur
Heterozygous (hybrid) - If the two alleles are different, the organism is heterozygous, or hybrid, for that trait. - Example: Ll, Bb, Aa
Genes - Factors that control traits- found on chromosomes - Inherited in pairs, 1 allele from dad and 1 allele from mom
Dominant trait Stronger traits represented by a capital letter - always shows up when the allele is present in a gene pair (RR , Rr)
Recessive trait Weaker traits represented by a lower case letter – is masked or hidden when paired with a dominant allele in a gene pair (rr)
