Topic3Ecosystems;Lesson3 Cycles of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Law of Conservation of Mass | matter is never created or destroyed, just appears in different chemical compounds as they get recycled through Earth's various systems |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | energy is not created or destroyed, simply transferred to different forms of energy |
| evaporation | the process by which molecules at the surface of liquid water absorb enough energy to change to a gas |
| condensation | the process of a gas changing to a liquid |
| precipitation | rain, snow, sleet, hail |
| Water Cycle | involves the process of evaporation, condensation and precipitation in a cycle from Earth's surface to the atmosphere and back |
| Carbon Cycle | the process of carbon moving though ecosystems in various ways |
| Oxygen Cycle | the process of oxygen moving through ecosystems in various ways |
| Nitrogen Cycle | the process of nitrogen moving through ecosystems once it is "fixed" |
| Nitrogen Fixation | combining nitrogen with other elements so that it is in a useable form |
| Carbon | element essential for life as it is the building block of living things |
| 2 Hydrogen Atoms and 1 Oxygen Atom | makes up a water molecule |
