| glycoprotein | used for cell recognition and attachment and binding to other cells |
| carrier protein | binds to specific substances and transfers them across the cell membrane using energy |
| glycolipid | maintains structure of the cell membrane and assists with cell recognition |
| peripheral protein | can detach and reattach to the membrane and is responsible for cell signalling |
| hypotonic | water diffusing into the cell causing it to burst |

| diffusion | movement of molecules from a high to low concentration |
| factors affecting the rate of exchange | surface area to volume ratio, concentration gradient, material being exchanged, temperature |
