symbiosis A close relationship between two species in which at least one benefits
ecosystem A community of organisms and their abiotic environment
energy pyramid A diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web
biodiversity The number of different species in an area
invasive species species that enter new ecosystems and multiply, harming native species and their habitats
parasitism A relationship between two organisms of different species where one benefits and the other is harmed
keystone species A species that influences the survival of many other species in an ecosystem
secondary consumer An organism that eats primary consumers
food web a diagram showing many connected and independent food chains
mutualism A relationship between two species in which both species benefit
biome A group of ecosystems with similar climates and organisms
commensalism A relationship between two organisms in which one organism benefits and the other is unaffected
abiotic non-living things in an ecosystem
niche An organism's particular role in an ecosystem
tertiary consumer An organism that eats secondary consumers
trophic level Each step in a food chain or food web
primary consumer An organism that eats producers
biotic the living or once living things in an ecosystem
native species Species that normally live and thrive in a particular ecosystem
carrying capacity Largest number of individuals of a population that an ecosystem can support
