Biology

chapter 12/ DNA/RNA

QuestionAnswer
Frederick Griffith worked on mice/ studied how pneumonia causing bacteria made people sick/ worked with two strains of bacteria
transformation process which one strain of bacteria is changed by a gene or gene from another strain of bacteria
Oswald Avery born in 1944/ discovered that the nucleic acie DNA stores and transmits genetic info from one generation to another/ DNA was a transforming factor
Hershey and Chase studied viruses-most important research and experiments done by these two
bacteriophages kind of virus that infects bacteria
two important facts by Hershey and Chase Viruses are made of DNA and RNA core protein coat/
How does a virus work must enter a host cell/virus attaches to the surface of host cell and injects its genetic material into it-viral genes take over producing many new viruses; host cell gradually destroyed allowing new viruses to be released
Hershey and Chase experiment used radioactive isotopes to determine which part of the virus enters the host cell/used phosphorus and sulfur/ concluded genetic material of bacteriophage was DNA not protein
Nucleotides DNA is made of this
Three Main parts of nucleotides 5-carbon sugar(deoxyribose), Phosphate group, Nitrogen base(A-adenine), T-Thymine, C-cytosine, G-Guacinine(DNA)
Watson and Cric developed the double helix model of the structure of DNA
DNA compared to a Ladder DNA is a double helix/two strand wound around each other/ sides are alternating sugar and phosphates/the rungs are nitrogen bases held together by hydrogen bonds
principle of base pairing principle that bonds in DNA can form only between adenine and thymine and between guanine and cytosine
DNA replication the copying process by which a cell duplicates its DNA/ watson and Crick realized upon the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA that it was the structure itself that explained how it worked

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
