Classification of vertebrate groups

Chordata characteristic 1 | Pharyngeal slits: series of openings connecting the inside of throat to the neck |
Chordata characteristic 2 | Notochord: rod of cartilage running underneath the nerve cord of the spine |
Chordata characteristic 3 | dorsal nerve cord: bundle of nerve fibres running down the "back", connecting the brain with lateral muscles and other organs. |
Fish characteristics | Scales made of bony plates, gills |
Amphibian characteristics | moist skin, skin permeable to gas exchange |
Reptilia (reptile) characteristics | Scales made of keratin, lungs with extensive folding |
Aves (birds) characteristics | Feathers made of keratin, lungs with bronchial tubes |
Mammals characteristics | lungs with alveoli, skin with follicles which produce hair or fur made of keratin. |
Mammal subclass: monotremes | lay eggs to give birth (e.g. echinda) |
Mammal subclass: marsupials | have a pouch for embryo development (e.g. kangaroos) |
Mammal subclass: Placentals | bare live young, which are nourished via the placenta for a relatively long time in the mother's uterus (e.g. dingo) |
