Classification of vertebrate groups

TermDefinition
Chordata characteristic 1 Pharyngeal slits: series of openings connecting the inside of throat to the neck
Chordata characteristic 2 Notochord: rod of cartilage running underneath the nerve cord of the spine
Chordata characteristic 3 dorsal nerve cord: bundle of nerve fibres running down the "back", connecting the brain with lateral muscles and other organs.
Fish characteristics Scales made of bony plates, gills
Amphibian characteristics moist skin, skin permeable to gas exchange
Reptilia (reptile) characteristics Scales made of keratin, lungs with extensive folding
Aves (birds) characteristics Feathers made of keratin, lungs with bronchial tubes
Mammals characteristics lungs with alveoli, skin with follicles which produce hair or fur made of keratin.
Mammal subclass: monotremes lay eggs to give birth (e.g. echinda)
Mammal subclass: marsupials have a pouch for embryo development (e.g. kangaroos)
Mammal subclass: Placentals bare live young, which are nourished via the placenta for a relatively long time in the mother's uterus (e.g. dingo)
