Biodiversity
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Biodiversity | the great variety of life that exists in our biosphere. |
Biodiversity hotspot | must have at least 1500 species of vascular plants found nowhere else in the world, and have lost at least 70% of natural vegetation. |
Biosphere | all the environments on earth that organisms inhabit: the combined sum of earth's ecosystems. |
Ecosystem | all of the organisms and abiotic factors and their interactions in a particular area at a particular time |
Species | A group of morphologically similar organisms that share a gene pool. members of the same _____ are able to interbreed under natural conditions to produce a viable and fertile offspring. |
Gene pool | the sum of all genes, including all of their different forms in a given population of one species. sometimes it is also used to refer to all of the genes in a species. |
Gene | a section of DNA in a chromosome that encodes an instruction for a specific protein. inherited by offspring, and come in different forms. |
Importance of biodiversity 1 | ecosystem processes are essential to survival. E.g. we depend on photosynthesis to convert light energy into chemical energy to provide oxygen. |
Importance of biodiversity 2 | Has cultural importance, as well as delivers clues in the changes of species over time. E.g. the land of Australia is important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. |
Importance of biodiversity 3 | Contributes to the production of food, purified water, fibre products, fuels, climate control and pharmaceuticals. |
Importance of biodiversity 4 | attracts tourism and therefore contributes to the economy. E.g. the great barrier reef alone brought in $6.4 billion in 2015-16. |
Morphology | characterising a species based on it's structural form |
Phylogenetic | characterises a species based on it's broader set of genetics |
Spatial scales | the space being occupied - the distribution - of the individuals in a species. |
Temporal scales | refers to time. Studied to provide details about biodiversity in a certain area over a certain time period |
