| 3. DNA | Deoxyribonucleic acid. Contains the genes and its function is to store and transmit genetic information. |
| 4. Gene(s) | Portion(s) of DNA that codify for proteins and controls a trait. |
| 5 Traits | Any physical characteristics that can be passed from parents to offspring. Traits can be determined by genes or environmental factors. |
| 6 Allele | Versions of a gene. |
| 7. Dominant | Determines the trait, even when is heterozygous or homozygous. Is represented by CAPITAL LETTERS. |
| 8. Recessive | Determines the trait only when both alleles are recessive. Is represented by lowercase letters. |
| 9. Genotype | The genetic makeup of an organism. The combination of alleles. |
| 10. Phenotype | Observable physical characteristics of an organism, including its physical traits. |
| 11. Homozygous/Purebred | An organism has two identical alleles of a gene. |
| 12. Heterozygous/Hybrid | An organism has two different alleles of a gene. |
| 13. Mitosis | Somatic cells divide to produce two identical daughter cells. |
| 14 Meiosis | Specialized cell division to produce gamete cells, sperm or eggs. |
