Cell Parts/Functions

Includes cell organelles and their functions

TermDefinition
Cell Wall A substance that surrounds the cell membrane and provides support to the cell. (found in plant cells)
Cell Membrane A protective layer that covers the cells and controls what goes in and out of the cell.
Cytoplasm The jelly like fluid that fills the cells.
Nucleus An large organelle in an eukaryotic cell that controls the cell and contains the DNA
Chloroplast Organelles in plant cells that trap sunlight for photosynthesis to take place.
Lysosome The organelle breaks down food and waste in the cell. (aka-trashcan)
Mitochondria The organelle that releases energy to the cell and gives it power.
Vacuole The organelle that stores water and other materials for the cell.
Eukaryotic Cell that has a nucleus as an organelle. hint: EU=DO
Prokaryotic Cell that does NOT have a nucleus as an organelle. hint: PRO=NO
Organelle The parts of a cell that perform a specific function.
Plant Cell Contains a cell wall and chloroplast that animal cells don't have.
