What is Ecology? The study of the interactions between living and nonliving things.
What is Population? A group of interbreeding organisms coexisting together.
What is Community? A group of populations living and interacting in the same area.
What is the Ecosystem? An association of living organisms and their physical environment.
What is a Biome? A group of ecosystems classified by climate and plant life.
What is a Primary consumer? An organism that eats producers.
What is a Secondary consumer? An organism that eats primary consumers.
What is a Tertiary consumer? An organism that eats secondary consumers.
What is the Ecological pyramid? A diagram that shows the biomass of organisms at each trophic level.
What is Biomass? A measure of the total dry mass of organisms within a particular region.
What is Transpiration? Evaporation of water from the leaves of a plant.
What is Watershed? An ecosystem where all water runoff drains into a single body of water.
What is the Greenhouse effect? The process by which certain gases (principally water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane) trap heat that would otherwise be escape the earth and radiate into space.
What are the three trophic levels? Primary consumer, secondary consumer, and tertiary consumer.
Which is better for providing a more accurate description of the feeding relationships of organisms in an ecosystem: a food web or a food chain? A food web
Is a mutualistic relationship a beneficial one or a harmful one? It is beneficial to both organisms.
A biologist is studying two different ecosystems. One is defined as a 30-yard stretch of ocean shoreline, and the other is a forest that runs one mile across and half of a mile wide. Which one will be the easiest to study?
In the previous problem, which ecosystem will most likely reveal the most information ? (The forest or the ocean shoreline?)
