| Domain | Largest taxonomic category, and there are only 3 domains: Eukarya, Eubacteria, and Archaea. |
| Kingdom | Second largest taxonomic rank, just below domain. Kingdoms are divided into smaller groups called phyla. |
| Phylum | Plural phyla, each phylum contains organisms that have been grouped together based on similarities. |
| Class | Group of related taxonomic orders. |
| Orders | An order can also be defined as a group of related families. |
| Family | Family is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies. |
| Genus | Taxonomic category composed of species based on phylogenetic relatedness or common features. |
| Species | Members of populations that actually or potentially interbreed in nature and produce fertile offspring. |
