8B Biological Classification

QuestionAnswer
Domain Largest taxonomic category, and there are only 3 domains: Eukarya, Eubacteria, and Archaea.
Kingdom Second largest taxonomic rank, just below domain. Kingdoms are divided into smaller groups called phyla.
Phylum Plural phyla, each phylum contains organisms that have been grouped together based on similarities.
Class Group of related taxonomic orders.
Orders An order can also be defined as a group of related families.
Family Family is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies.
Genus Taxonomic category composed of species based on phylogenetic relatedness or common features.
Species Members of populations that actually or potentially interbreed in nature and produce fertile offspring.
