producers an organism that makes its own food with energy from the sun; all plants (including trees, flowers, shrubs, and algae)
consumers an organism that eats other organisms for survival
decomposers organisms that break down dead or decaying matter returning the nutrients to the soil
microbe organisms that are to small to see

food web overlapping or interconnected food chains
transfer movement of matter and energy in an ecosystem
balance when an ecosystem is stable because there a variety of organisms and enough space for all to thrive
apex predator top of food chain; top predator
energy pyramid a model that shows the flow of energy from one trophic level to the next along a food chain
tropic level sort animals and plants according to where they are in the food chain and how they obtain energy
