producers | an organism that makes its own food with energy from the sun; all plants (including trees, flowers, shrubs, and algae) |
consumers | an organism that eats other organisms for survival |
decomposers | organisms that break down dead or decaying matter returning the nutrients to the soil |
microbe | organisms that are to small to see |
food chain | shows how matter and energy flow from one organism to an other |
food web | overlapping or interconnected food chains |
transfer | movement of matter and energy in an ecosystem |
balance | when an ecosystem is stable because there a variety of organisms and enough space for all to thrive |
apex predator | top of food chain; top predator |
energy pyramid | a model that shows the flow of energy from one trophic level to the next along a food chain |
tropic level | sort animals and plants according to where they are in the food chain and how they obtain energy |
