| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ligand | General name for smaller signal molecules that binds to a larger receptor |
| Synthesis | The step in the cell cycle when DNA is replicated (or copied) |
| Interphase | In a study of normal body tissue cells, most cells would be in this phase |
| Growth Factor | A signal molecule promoting mitosis |
| Glucagon | A signal molecule that regulates the storage of glucose into glycogen |
| Receptor Protein | Specifically shaped to interact with a signal molecule |
| Telophase | At the end of this mitotic phase, cellular DNA amounts decrease by half |
| mRNA | A special genetic code for manufacturing a protein. |
| Metaphase | Chromosomes are aligned on equator by microtubules during this phase |
| Cascade | A special type of reaction that amplifies with each step |
| Steroid | Nonpolar hormone that easily glides into a cell without a channel protein |
| Nuclease | An enzyme that will destroy the nucleus during apoptosis |
| Insulin | A signal molecule that triggers the release of glucose in cells |
