Biology Vocab
(DNA Replication concept 1&2)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Nucleic acids | macromolecule that makes up our genetic material |
| Genes | the blueprint/instructions for making proteins, located at certain points in a chromosome |
| Double helix | a structure that essentially looks like a twisted ladder |
| Chromosomes | tightly coiled strands of DNA |
| Helicase | Enzyme that unwinds the DNA double helix prior to DNA replication |
| Topoisomerase | Enzyme that unzips the DNA and keeps the two strands apart while each side of the DNA is being replicated |
| DNA polymerase | Enzyme that replicated DNA by synthesizing a new strand of DNA on a single-stranded DNA template |
| DNA ligase | Enzyme that fixes gaps in the newly synthesized DNA strands after replication has occurred |
| Semi-conservative | Refers to the newly replicated DNA in which one of the DNA strands is from the parent molecule, and the other strand was synthesized during the replication process |
