Marzano Vocabulary - Pre-AP Biology - 2009-2010

VocabularyDefinition
Prokrayotic an organism whose DNA is not contained within a nucleus
Eukaryotic an organism that has a visible nuclei and organelles
Protein complex natural substance that has a globular or fibrous structure composed of linked amino acids. Also essential to the structure and function of all living cells and viruses
Lipid biological compound that's not soluble in water *fats, oils, and waxes*
Mitosis process of cell division in which the parent cell divides into two daughter cells, who both have the same number of chromosomes as the original
Meiosis process of cell division during which the nucleus divides into four nuclei, each of which contains half the usual number of chromosomes
Fermentation breakdown of carbohydrates by microorganisms
Biotic relating to life and living organisms
Abiotic relating to pyhsical and chemical aspects of an organism's environment
Symbiosis a close association of animals and plants of different species that is often, but not always, a mutual benefit
Gametes a specialized male/female cell w/ half the normal number of chromosomes that unites with a cell of the opposite sex in the process of sexual reproduction
Carcinogen a substance/agent that can cause cancer
