QuestionAnswer
Cell cycle the life cycle of a cell; in eukaryotes, it consists of a cell-growth period in which DNA is synthesized and a cell-division period in which mitosis takes place
Mitosis in eukaryotic cells, a process of cell division that forms two new nuclei, each of which has the same number of chromosomes
cytokinesis the division of the cytoplasm of a cell; cytokinesis follows the division of the cell's nucleus by mitosis or meiosis
chromosome in a eukaryotic cell, one of the structures in the nucleus that are made up of DNA and protein; in a prokaryotic cell, the main ring of DNA
chromatin a portion of the cell nucleus made up of DNA and proteins; it is the carrier of the genes in inheritance
centrosome an organelle that contains the centrioles and is the center of dynamic activity in mitosis
telophase the final stage of mitosis meiosis, during which a nuclear membrane forms around each set of new chromosomes
Apoptosis programmed cell death
Cancer a tumor in which the cells begin dividing at an uncontrolled rate and become invasive
benign an abnormal but non cancerous cell mass or growth
malignant a cancerous mass of cells
metastasize to spread by transferring a disease-causing agent from the site of the disease to other parts of the body
carcinogen a cancer-causing substance
asexual reproduction reproduction that does not involve the union of gametes and in which a single parent produces offspring that are genetically identical to the parent
binary fission a form of asexual reproduction in single-celled organism by which one cell divides into two cell divides into two cells of the same size
stem cell cell that can divide for long periods of time while remaining undifferentiated
chromatid one of the two stands of a chromosome that become visible during mitosis or meiosis
centromere the region of the chromosome that holds the two sister chromatids together during mitosis
prophase the first stage of mitosis and meiosis in cell division; characterized by the condensation of the chromosomes
metaphase one of the stages of mitosis and meiosis during which all of the chromosomes move to the cells equator
anaphase a phrase of mitosis and meiosis in which the chromosomes separate

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
