Digestive System Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
Saliva liquid that moistens food in the mouth and contains enzymes to digest starch
Mechanical Digestion breaking up food into smaller pieces of food Example: chewing
Chemical Digestion enzymes break food into monomers the cell can use. Example: Proteins to amino acids
Simple sugar break down product of starches
Enzymes proteins which chemically digest food in the digestive tract
Epiglottis flap which prevents food from entering trachea
Amino acids break down product of proteiN
Peristalsis muscular contractions which move food through the digestive tract
Bile chemical produced by liver and stored in gall bladder which breaks up fat into fat droplets
Emulsification fat breaking up into fat droplets
Villi fingerlike projections which help speed food absorption
Absorption small food molecules move from the small intestine into the bloodstream
Elimination undigested food exits the rectum. (Note! This is not METABOLIC WASTE)
