regulation control and coordination
cerebrum area of the brain responsible for all voluntary activities of the body ex: memory, learning, behavior
medulla involuntary actions - breathing, heartbeat
spinal cord reflex center
neurons cells that make up the nervous system
what are the 3 neurons? sensory neuron, interneuron, motor neuron
neurotransmitter chemical used by a neuron to transmit an impulse across a synapse to another cell
what are the two parts of the nervous system peripheral & central
central nervous system brain and spinal cord
impulse electric signal produced by a neuron when stimulated. This signal is then transmitted by synapses, or connections between the cells.
hypothalamus Part of the brain that controls temperature regulation
endocrine system Glands secrete hormones that regulate processes such as growth, reproduction, and nutrient use (metabolism) by body cells.
hormones chemical messengers that are manufactured by the endocrine glands, travel through the bloodstream, and affect other tissues
receptors parts of the cell membrane that receive the neurotransmitter and/or hormones (receive messages)
insulin A protein hormone synthesized in the pancreas that regulates high blood sugar levels by facilitating the uptake of glucose into tissues
glucagon A protein hormone secreted by pancreatic endocrine cells that raises blood glucose levels, when blood sugar is too low
feedback mechanism a cycle of events in which information from one step controls or affects a previous step
homeostasis process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment
pancreas Regulates the level of sugar in the blood. Releases insulin and glucagon
dynamic equlibrium a state of balance between continuing processes
