Term | Definition |
---|---|
cerebellum | coordination, balance, |
stimulus | a signal to which an organism responds |
response | a reaction to stimulus |
regulation | control and coordination |
cerebrum | area of the brain responsible for all voluntary activities of the body ex: memory, learning, behavior |
medulla | involuntary actions - breathing, heartbeat |
spinal cord | reflex center |
neurons | cells that make up the nervous system |
what are the 3 neurons? | sensory neuron, interneuron, motor neuron |
neurotransmitter | chemical used by a neuron to transmit an impulse across a synapse to another cell |
what are the two parts of the nervous system | peripheral & central |
central nervous system | brain and spinal cord |
impulse | electric signal produced by a neuron when stimulated. This signal is then transmitted by synapses, or connections between the cells. |
hypothalamus | Part of the brain that controls temperature regulation |
endocrine system | Glands secrete hormones that regulate processes such as growth, reproduction, and nutrient use (metabolism) by body cells. |
hormones | chemical messengers that are manufactured by the endocrine glands, travel through the bloodstream, and affect other tissues |
receptors | parts of the cell membrane that receive the neurotransmitter and/or hormones (receive messages) |
insulin | A protein hormone synthesized in the pancreas that regulates high blood sugar levels by facilitating the uptake of glucose into tissues |
glucagon | A protein hormone secreted by pancreatic endocrine cells that raises blood glucose levels, when blood sugar is too low |
feedback mechanism | a cycle of events in which information from one step controls or affects a previous step |
homeostasis | process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment |
pancreas | Regulates the level of sugar in the blood. Releases insulin and glucagon |
dynamic equlibrium | a state of balance between continuing processes |
diabetes | A condition in which the body is unable to produce enough insulin, the hormone required for the metabolism of sugar |
