Genes and Heredity
Term | Definition |
---|---|
heredity | the passing of traits from parents to offspring |
dominant allele | one whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present |
recessive allele | hidden when the dominant allele is present |
genotype | an organism's genetic makeup or combination of alleles |
phenotype | the organism's physical appearance or visible traits |
chromosome | thread like structures in the nucleus that contain DNA that is passed from one generation to the next |
pedigree | a tool that geneticists use to map out the inheritance of traits |
meiosis | a very special cell division process during which the number of chromosomes is reduced in half |
DNA | (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed on to the offspring |
protein synthesis | making proteins by linking together specific amino acids in a sequence |
mRNA | (messenger RNA) carries copies of instructions for the assembly of amino acids into proteins from DNA |
tRNA | (transfer RNA) carries amino acids to the ribosome during protein synthesis |
sex chromosomes | the pair of chromosomes carrying genes that determine whether a person is biologically male or female |
autosomal chromosomes | 22 pairs that are not sex chromosomes; half from mom and half from dad |
mutation | any change in the DNA of a gene or chromosome |
sex-linked genes | genes carried on a sex chromosome |
genetic engineering | transferring the genes from the DNA of one organism to another organism |
clone | an organism that has the same genes as the organism from which it was produced |
genome | the complete set of genetic information that an organism carries in its DNA |
