| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| heredity | the passing of traits from parents to offspring |
| dominant allele | one whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present |
| recessive allele | hidden when the dominant allele is present |
| genotype | an organism's genetic makeup or combination of alleles |
| phenotype | the organism's physical appearance or visible traits |
| chromosome | thread like structures in the nucleus that contain DNA that is passed from one generation to the next |
| pedigree | a tool that geneticists use to map out the inheritance of traits |
| meiosis | a very special cell division process during which the number of chromosomes is reduced in half |
| DNA | (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed on to the offspring |
| protein synthesis | making proteins by linking together specific amino acids in a sequence |
| mRNA | (messenger RNA) carries copies of instructions for the assembly of amino acids into proteins from DNA |
| tRNA | (transfer RNA) carries amino acids to the ribosome during protein synthesis |
| sex chromosomes | the pair of chromosomes carrying genes that determine whether a person is biologically male or female |
| autosomal chromosomes | 22 pairs that are not sex chromosomes; half from mom and half from dad |
| mutation | any change in the DNA of a gene or chromosome |
| sex-linked genes | genes carried on a sex chromosome |
| genetic engineering | transferring the genes from the DNA of one organism to another organism |
| clone | an organism that has the same genes as the organism from which it was produced |
| genome | the complete set of genetic information that an organism carries in its DNA |
