genetics & heredity

QuestionAnswer
allele various forms of a gene, like R or r
amino acids the "building blocks" that get joined together by the ribosome to make a protein
chromosome the physical structure in a cell's nucleus that contains genes
DNA Directions for making proteins.
dominant the allele that “wins”, like R
Eukaryotic cell A cell with a nucleus.
gene a unit of inheritance; it is the directions for making a protein
genotype the gene pair an organism has, like Rr
Golgi body The organelle that folds proteins into a shape that actually works.
messenger RNA it carries the protein making instructions from the DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm.
mutation a change in an organism's DNA
nucleotide base a letter in the DNA "alphabet" used to create the genetic code
Nucleus Holds the genetic material (DNA).
Organelle A part of a cell that does a specific job.
phenotype how an organism looks, like red flowers
protein a molecule that does a job that helps keep an organism alive
Punnett Square a chart used to show all the ways alleles from two parents can combine and be passed to offspring
recessive the allele that “loses”, like r
replication the process by which DNA makes a copy of itself before the cell divides
Ribosome The organelle that helps make proteins by joining amino acids together.
transcription the process of mRNA carrying the message from the DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm
transfer RNA it moves amino acids so the ribosome can join them together to make a protein
translation the process of transfer RNA working with the ribosome to assemble amino acids into a protein
XX The chromosome pair for a female
XY The chromosome pair for a male

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
