Regents - Photosynth
Regents level vocab terms pertaining to photosynthesis
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Chloroplasts | Organelles that capture energy from sunlight and use it to produce food for the cell. |
| Photosynthesis | Process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high-energy carbohydrates such as sugars and starches. |
| Autotrophs | Organisms that are able to make their own food. |
| Heterotrophs | Organisms that depend on other organisms for their food. |
| Mesophyll | Spongy tissue in the interior of the leaf where most chloroplasts are found. |
| Stomata | Small openings on the underside of a leaf through which oxygen |
| Stroma | The fluid of the chloroplast surrounding the thylakoid membrane; site of the Calvin cycle. |
| Thylakoids | Membranous structures within a chloroplast that serve as the site for light reactions in photosynthesis. |
| Grana | A stacked portion of the thylakoid membrane in the chloroplast. |
| Chlorophyll | A green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants |
| Light Reactions | The first of two major stages in photosynthesis. Converts solar energy to the chemical energy of ATP and NADPH |
| Calvin Cycle | Light-independent reactions of photosynthesis in which energy from ATP and NADPH is used to build high-energy compounds such as sugar. |
| NADPH/NADP+ | An electron carrier involved in photosynthesis. |
