Regents level vocab terms pertaining to photosynthesis

QuestionAnswer
Chloroplasts Organelles that capture energy from sunlight and use it to produce food for the cell.
Photosynthesis Process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high-energy carbohydrates such as sugars and starches.
Autotrophs Organisms that are able to make their own food.
Heterotrophs Organisms that depend on other organisms for their food.
Mesophyll Spongy tissue in the interior of the leaf where most chloroplasts are found.
Stomata Small openings on the underside of a leaf through which oxygen
Stroma The fluid of the chloroplast surrounding the thylakoid membrane; site of the Calvin cycle.
Thylakoids Membranous structures within a chloroplast that serve as the site for light reactions in photosynthesis.
Grana A stacked portion of the thylakoid membrane in the chloroplast.
Chlorophyll A green pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants
Light Reactions The first of two major stages in photosynthesis. Converts solar energy to the chemical energy of ATP and NADPH
Calvin Cycle Light-independent reactions of photosynthesis in which energy from ATP and NADPH is used to build high-energy compounds such as sugar.
NADPH/NADP+ An electron carrier involved in photosynthesis.
