Week 3 Study Guide

Final exam review for BIO 011 UC MERCED

QuestionAnswer
Explain the three principles of cell theory. 1 All living organisms are composed of one or more cells. 2 All cells arise from pre-existing cells. 3 Cells contain hereditary information that is passed from cell to cell during cell division.
List the 10 levels of biological organization in order. From largest to smallest: Biosphere, Ecosystem, Community, Population, Organism, Organs, Tissue, Cell, Organelles and Molecules
Identify which type of microscopes to use to observe different cells or components of life. Light microscopes, magnify to 1000-2000x Electron microscope, magnify to 2,000,000x
What are the 4 stages proposed for the Origin of Life on Earth? 1.Organic Molecules 2. Polymers form 3. Enclose polymers 4. Cellular functions arise
Prokaryotic cells Smaller, simpler, and have no nucleus or membrane-bound organelles. They reproduce by binary fission and have less genetic variation.
Eukaryotic cells Larger, more complex, and have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. They reproduce by mitosis or meiosis and have more genetic variation.
What are Animal Cells characterized by? What type? Eukaryotic cells, which means they have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. They have a mitochondrea, ER, golgi apparatus, lysosomes, and centrioles.
What are Prokaryotic Cells characterized by? No nucleus -DNA in an unbound region called the nucleoid -No membrane-bound organelles -Cytoplasm bound by the plasma membrane -Ribosomes to produce proteins
What are Eukaryotic Cells characterized by? True nucleus containing most DNA of cell. Has nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, ER, golgi apparatus, lysosomesand peroxisomes.
What are Plant Cells characterized by? What type? Are also eukaryotic cells, but they have some unique features that distinguish them from animal cells. They have chloroplasts, vacuoles, cell wall and plasmodesmata
Identify the major eukaryotic cell organelles and list their major functions. Nucelus, ER, Golgi apparatus, Mitochondria, Chrloroplasts, Vesicles,Cytoskeleto, Cilia and flagella

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
