Photosynthesis/ Leaf
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Photosynthesis | The process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of glucose |
| Chloroplast | Organelle within plant cells that is the site of photosynthesis |
| Chlorophyll | A pigment that gives plants their green color |
| Autotroph/Autotrophic nutrition | Organisms that make their own food |
| Producer | Organisms that make their own food |
| Heterotroph/Heterotrophic nutrition | Organisms that obtain their food (energy) by consuming other organisms |
| Consumer | Organisms that obtain their food from other organisms |
| Herbivore | Consumers that eat producers (plant-eater) |
| Carnivore | Consumers that eat other consumers (meat-eaters) |
| ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) | The source of energy for use and storage at the cellular level |
| Raw materials for photosynthesis | Carbon dioxide and water |
| Vascular Bundle | Veins of leaves contain xylem (moves water) and phloem (transports sugar) |
| Cuticle | Protective waxy coating leaves. Reduces water loss |
| Epidermis | “Skin” of the leaf. Protects the plant |
| Palisades layer | Column-shaped cells beneath epidermis. Active area of photosynthesis |
| Spongy layer | Beneath palisades layer. Contains gases involved in photosynthesis. |
| Stomate | Openings under leaf Controls gas exchange Helps to maintain homeostasis in plants |
| Guard cells | Controls the opening and closing of stoma of a leaf |
| Transpiration | Water comes up from the roots and exits the leaves through evaporation |
