Energy Transfer in ecosystems

| producer | organism that makes its own food using energy from the environment |
| decomposer | an organism that gets energy and nutrients by breaking down the remains of other organisms |
| consumer | an organism that eats other organisms. |
| herbivore | a consumer that eats plants. |
| carnivore | a consumer that eats other consumers |
| omnivore | a consumer that eats producers and consumers. |
| scavengers | consumer that feeds on dead or dying organisms |
| chemical energy | the energy stored in the bonds between atoms, it is released when the bonds are broken down |
| food chain | the path of energy transfer from producers to consumers. |
| primary consumer | the consumer that eats producers |
| secondary consumer | a consumer that eats a primary consumer |
| tertiary consumer | a consumer that eats a secondary consumer |
| food web | a diagram that shows the feeding relationships among many different organisms |
