Cell Membrane
| Passive Transport | Movement of materials that req |
|---|---|
| Facilitated Diffusion | Diffusion with a “helper molecule” (Protein Channel) No ATP needed. |
| Passive Transport | Movement of materials that requires NO energy (ATP) |
| Protein Channel | Path for certain molecules to pass through the membrane. |
| Dilute Solution | Contains SMALL amount of SOLUTE in a solution. (Weak Hot Chocolate) |
| Semi-permeable | Only certain materials pass through membrane |
| Solvent | Substance that DOES the dissolving |
| Dynamic Equilibrium | When the forward and reverse processes occur at the same rate. |
| Phospholipid Bilayer | A two-layered arrangement of phosphate (hydrophilic) and lipid (hydrophobic) molecules that form a cell membrane |
| Diffusion | Movement from HIGH to LOW concentration |
| Solution | Mixture of two or more substances |
| Solute | Substance that GETS dissolved in solution |
| Concentrated Solution | Solution that contains a LARGE amount of SOLUTE (Strong Hot Chocolate) |
| Hydrophilic | Water-loving |
| Hydrophobic | Does not like water |
| Active Transport | Molecules move against concentration LOW to HIGH "uphill". Requires energy (ATP) |
| Osmosis | Movement of water across a Semi-permeable Membrane. |
| Isotonic | Same amount of water moves into and out of the cell (Balanced) |
| Hypertonic | More solute, less water outside the cell (Saltwater) |
| Hypotonic | Less solute, more water outside the cell (Fresh water) |
