Genes Sections of DNA the code for proteins
Alleles Different forms of a gene
Chromosomes Long strands of DNA that contain many genes
Dominant An allele that is expressed if only one copy present (PP,Pp)
Recessive An allele that is expressed only two copies present (pp)
Homozygous Having two identical alleles
Heterozygous Having two different alleles
Autosome Any chromosome that is not a sex chromosome
Trisomy When there is an extra copy of a chromosome
Monosomy When where is a missing copy of chromosome
Nondisjunction When chromosomes fail to separate correctly
Diploid Having two sets of chromosomes in each cell
Haploid Having one set of chromosomes in each cell
Inheritance Passing of genetic traits from parents to offspring
Punnet square a diagram used to predict offspring genotype
