7th Grade - Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| chemical energy | the energy stored in the bonds between atoms that make up food |
| producers | organisms that can make their own food |
| consumers | organisms that obtain their food by consuming other organisms |
| decomposers | organisms that break down dead organisms or the waste of other organisms to get energy. |
| photosynthesis | the process of converting radiant energy into chemical energy |
| photosynthesis word formula | carbon dioxide + water + radiant energy --> glucose + oxygen |
| chloroplast | organelle in which photosynthesis takes place, contains chlorophyll |
| chlorophyll | a green pigment that captures radiant energy |
| photosynthesis chemical formula | 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy ---> C6H12O6 + 6O2 |
| glucose | a sugar made during photosynthesis that stores chemical energy; used as chemical energy to make ATP for all living things |
| ATP | molecule used by cells to store chemical energy, created during cellular respiration. |
| cellular respiration | the process of breaking down food to produce ATP |
| mitochondrion | organelle where most of cellular respiration occurs to produce ATP in all multicellular organisms and some single celled organisms |
| cellular respiration word formula | oxygen + glucose --> ATP + CO2 + water |
| cellular respiration chemical formula | C6H12O6 + 6O2 --> 6H2O + 6CO2 + ATP |
