NUCLEIC ACIDS - what are they made of? Contains elements: C (carbon), H (hydrogen), O (oxygen), N (nitrogen), P (phosphorous). Information molecules.
What are the functions of Nucleic Acids? Functions: 1) information storage & 2) transfer of information (instructions for building protein)
What are Nucleotides MONOMER of Nucleic Acid Made of phosphate, sugar, nitrogenous base (A, C, G, T, U)
What are examples of Nucleic Acid s? DNA - deoxyribonucleic acid RNA - ribonucleic acid
DNA Structure: two linked strands that wind around each other - a double helix. Contains the sugar deoxyribose. Contains genes. Uses the bases THIAMINE, cytosine, adenine, and guanine. Genetic material that organisms inherit from biological parents.
RNA Structure: is single-stranded. Contains the sugar ribose. Uses the bases URACIL, cytosine, adenine, and guanine. Genetic material that helps express traits.
What is a gene? A sequence of DNA that codes for a protein and codes for a trait
What is genetics? the study of heredity
