Bio Ch 2.4 Biological Molecules
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Organic molecules | Contains the element CARBON Often also contain H, O, and N Carbon can covalently bond to make long chains Examples: Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleic acids |
| Inorganic molecules | Do NOT contain Carbon Exceptions - CO2 (carbon dioxide), CaCO3 Example: Water H2O (makes up 65% of your body) |
| Biological Molecule | Carbon containing compounds that are found in living organisms. Often contain H, O, N, S (sulfur) & P (Phosphorous) Examples: Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleic acids |
| Monomer | A building-block molecule. (mono = one, single) Examples: glucose (a single sugar) & fructose |
| Polymer | Big molecules built from building-block molecules. (poly = many) Examples: starch (many glucoses together) & cellulose |
