What are evacuated tubes? Tubes used to collect blood.
What are the colors for on the sample tubes? They represent the additives in the tube.
Additives Chemicals in the tubes used to prepare the blood for testing.
What is the standard (common) order of draw? Light blue, red, green, lavender. Sodium Citrate, Serum, Sodium/Lithium Heparin, K^2 EDTA K^3 EDTA
What is the light blue tube's additive? Sodium citrate
What is the ratio for a sodium citrate sample? 9:1 (b:a)
Why should you never mix the order of draw? Because you don't want to contaminate other samples.
What is the most common blood test and tube color? CBC (Complete Blood Count - Lavendar/Purple)
Serum tubes Red family of tubes. Do not contain additives or clot activators.
Anticoagulant Prevents blood from clotting
PTT Test Partial Thromboplastin Time - used to monitor heparin levels.
