Gastrointestinal motility

QuestionAnswer
How are most gastroinestinal reflexes initiated? - luminal stimuli: distension, osmolarity, acidity and digestion products
How do reflexes effect this? - mediated by short reflexes in enteric nervous system and long reflexes involving afferent and efferent neurons to and from the CNS
What purpose does the stomach serve? - as a reservoir, fragment food, empty gastric contents into duodenum at a controlled rate, vomiting - to remove noxious stimuli
What are peristaltic waves? - smooth muscle contractions are regulated by cycles of membrane depolarisation
Distension of the stomach? - increases force of contraction and rate of gastric emptying
Distension of the small intestine? - fat, acid or hypertonic solutions in the intestinal lumen inhibit gastric contractions
