What is a renewable resource? A resource that can be produced or replenished by a healthy ecosystem
What is a nonrenewable resource? A resource that cannot be replenished by natural processes within a reasonable amount of time
What is desertification? A process in which land in dry climates turn farmland into desert because of overgrazing, drought, or climate change
What is deforestation? The loss of forests
What is a pollutant? A harmful material that can enter the biosphere
What is acid rain? Rain that contains nitric and sulfuric acids
What is biodiversity? The total of all the genetically based variation in all organisms in the biosphere
What is genetic diversity? The total of all different forms of genetic information carried by a particular species, or by all organisms on Earth
What is an ecological footprint? The total area of functioning land and water ecosystems needed both to provide the resources an individual or population uses, and to absorb and make harmless the wastes that an individual or population generates
