Photosynthesis

TermDefinition
Calvin cycle Light-independent reactions in which CO2 and energy from ATP and NADPH is used to produce glucose
Chlorophyll Principal light-absorbing pigment used by photosynthetic organisms
Thylakoids Sac-like photosynthetic membranes found in chloroplasts
Photosystem Complex of chlorophyll and protein found in photosynthetic membranes
ATP synthase Transmembrane enzyme complex that uses energy generated by the flow of H+ through it to synthesize ATP
Stroma Fluid portion of the chloroplast outside of the thylakoids
NADPH High-energy electron carrier produced in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis
ATP Molecule used by cells to store and release energy
Light-dependent reactions Set of reactions in photosynthesis that uses light energy to produce ATP and NADPH
Autotroph Organism that makes its own food from inorganic compounds; also known as a primary producer
Electron transport chain Series of electron carrier proteins that shuttle high-energy electrons during ATP-generating reactions
Photosynthesis Process used by plants and other autotrophs to capture light energy and use it to convert CO2 and H2O into energy-rich carbohydrates and O2
Grana Stacks of thylakoids
O2 By-product of the splitting of water during the light-dependent reactions
RuBisCO Enzyme that fixes CO2 and attaches it to RuBP in the 1st step of the Calvin cycle

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
