Photosynthesis
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Calvin cycle | Light-independent reactions in which CO2 and energy from ATP and NADPH is used to produce glucose |
| Chlorophyll | Principal light-absorbing pigment used by photosynthetic organisms |
| Thylakoids | Sac-like photosynthetic membranes found in chloroplasts |
| Photosystem | Complex of chlorophyll and protein found in photosynthetic membranes |
| ATP synthase | Transmembrane enzyme complex that uses energy generated by the flow of H+ through it to synthesize ATP |
| Stroma | Fluid portion of the chloroplast outside of the thylakoids |
| NADPH | High-energy electron carrier produced in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis |
| ATP | Molecule used by cells to store and release energy |
| Light-dependent reactions | Set of reactions in photosynthesis that uses light energy to produce ATP and NADPH |
| Autotroph | Organism that makes its own food from inorganic compounds; also known as a primary producer |
| Electron transport chain | Series of electron carrier proteins that shuttle high-energy electrons during ATP-generating reactions |
| Photosynthesis | Process used by plants and other autotrophs to capture light energy and use it to convert CO2 and H2O into energy-rich carbohydrates and O2 |
| Grana | Stacks of thylakoids |
| O2 | By-product of the splitting of water during the light-dependent reactions |
| RuBisCO | Enzyme that fixes CO2 and attaches it to RuBP in the 1st step of the Calvin cycle |
