EcologyQuiz1
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Define Ecology | The scientific study of interactions among organisms with each other and the environment |
Define Biosphere | The portion of the planet that can sustain life |
Define Species | A group of individuals similar to one another can breed and fertile offspring |
Define Population | A group of organisms of one species that interbreed and live together in a defined area |
Define Community | A group of populations comprised of many species that live together in a defined area |
Define Ecosystem | A group of communities and the physical (non-living/abiotic) environment |
Define Biome | A large area that has a particular climate and species of plants and animals that live there |
Define Biodiversity | The variety of organisms, the organisms genetic differences, and the ecosystems in which they occur (Ecological and Species Diversity) |
Define Biotic and Abiotic Factors | Biotic refers to living factors that affects an ecosystem while Abiotic refers to non-living factors that affects an ecosystem |
Define Habitat | A place where a particular population resides |
Define Succession | A slow but regular proggresion of species of replacement over time. Natural disasters or human disturbances can cause sudden changes |
Difference between Primary and Secondary Succession | Primary is when succession occurs on land where no life previously existed, where the first species there are called Pioneers. Secondary is when succession happens on land where life once existed |
Define Primary Productivity | The rate at which producers make energy (from sunlight) |
Define Producers (or Autotrophs) | Produce energy by capturing sunlight or using chemicals |
Define Consumers (Or Heterotrophs) | Organisms that consume other organisms for food |
Difference between Herbivores, Carnivores, and Omnivores | Herbivores eat plants, Carnivores eat meat, and Omnivores eat both |
Define Detrivores | Organisms that obtain their energy from dead matter or waste |
Define Decomposer | Causes decay and releases nutrients back into enviroment; curcial to 'circle of life' |
Define Food Chain | The path of energy through trophic levels, from the sun to producers to consumers |
Define Trophic Level | An assigned level in a food chain based on how an organism gets energy |
Define Food Web | Multiple connected food chains showing the complex interactions within an ecosystem |
Why does an organism only consume a small amount of energy when eating another organism | Majority of the energy consumed is used for movement, reproduction, and body heat |
Define Ten-Percent Law | Only 10% of energy is passed on from trophic level to trophic level, usually measured in calories |
Define Energy Pyramid | A diagram that represents the amount of energy stored in the trophic levels, where producers on the bottom |
Define Biomass | The dry weight of living tissue found within a trophic level, mainly being measured in grams of organic matter per unit area |
Define Parasite | An entity that infects and attempts to control its host in order to take nutrients from it |
Define Symbiotic Relationship | Specific types of relationships where different species live together. |
Define Parasitism | A Symbiotic Relationship where one organism benefits while the other is harmed |
Define Mutualism | A Symbiotic Relationship where both organisms involved benefit |
Define Commensalism | A Symbiotic Relationship where one organism benefits while the other isn't affected by it |
