Honors Bio Ch10
The Cell Cycle and Mitosis
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell cycle | Series of events in which a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form 2 daughter cells |
| Tumor | Tissue mass formed by excessive cell division |
| Cancer | Disorder characterized by uncontrolled cell growth |
| Cyclin | Protein that regulates the cell cycle |
| Interphase | Portion of the cell cycle that occurs between cell divisions; it consists of the G1, S, and G2 phases |
| Mitosis | Division of the cell's nucleus |
| Cytokinesis | Division of the cytoplasm |
| Chromatin | Packaged form of DNA wound around histone proteins in bead-like structures called nucleosomes |
| Chromosome | Structure that contains genetic information and is composed of DNA and protein; humans have 46 |
| Chromatid | Strand of DNA in a chromosome |
| Centromere | Area of attachment between 2 sister chromatids or the short and long arms of a chromosome |
| Asexual reproduction | Generation of genetically identical offspring from a single parent |
| Apoptosis | Programmed cell death |
| Prophase | First phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes condense, the nuclear membrane breaks down, and the spindle forms |
| Metaphase | Second phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell |
| Anaphase | Third phase of mitosis in which sister chromatids separate |
| Telophase | Fourth and final phase of mitosis in which chromosomes de-condense, nuclei reform, and the spindle breaks down |
| Binary fission | Method of prokaryotic cell division |
| Metastasis | Spread of cancer cells to a new location in the body |
| Centrioles | Paired microtubular structures that organize the spindle apparatus during mitosis |
