Honors Bio Ch10

The Cell Cycle and Mitosis

TermDefinition
Cell cycle Series of events in which a cell grows, prepares for division, and divides to form 2 daughter cells
Tumor Tissue mass formed by excessive cell division
Cancer Disorder characterized by uncontrolled cell growth
Cyclin Protein that regulates the cell cycle
Interphase Portion of the cell cycle that occurs between cell divisions; it consists of the G1, S, and G2 phases
Mitosis Division of the cell's nucleus
Cytokinesis Division of the cytoplasm
Chromatin Packaged form of DNA wound around histone proteins in bead-like structures called nucleosomes
Chromosome Structure that contains genetic information and is composed of DNA and protein; humans have 46
Chromatid Strand of DNA in a chromosome
Centromere Area of attachment between 2 sister chromatids or the short and long arms of a chromosome
Asexual reproduction Generation of genetically identical offspring from a single parent
Apoptosis Programmed cell death
Prophase First phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes condense, the nuclear membrane breaks down, and the spindle forms
Metaphase Second phase of mitosis in which the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell
Anaphase Third phase of mitosis in which sister chromatids separate
Telophase Fourth and final phase of mitosis in which chromosomes de-condense, nuclei reform, and the spindle breaks down
Binary fission Method of prokaryotic cell division
Metastasis Spread of cancer cells to a new location in the body
Centrioles Paired microtubular structures that organize the spindle apparatus during mitosis

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
