Inheritance Patterns
Ch 10.2
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the inheritance pattern of Incomplete Dominance like? | A heterozygous phenotype is an intermediate of the two homozygous phenotypes(the 2 homozygous phenotypes "blend")-no allele is dominant over the other. Example:homozygous red flower crossed with a homozygous yellow flower give heterozygous orange flower |
| What is the inheritance pattern of Co-dominance like? | Heterozygous phenotype will express two phenotypes-1 from each allele. Neither allele is dominant because both are expressed fully. Example:spotted flowers which are offspring of two different color flowers cross breeding (offspring have both colors) |
| What is inheritance pattern of Complete Dominance like? | One allele of a gene is dominant to the other and will be expressed over the other allele-in a heterozygous phenotype. Example:parents- homozygous brown-eyed (dominant) homozygous blue-eyed (recessive) breed=all offspring will be heterozygous brown-ey |
| What is the inheritance pattern of Multiple Alleles like? | Gene has more than two alleles-with different phenotypes, but only two are present in offspring. Example:blood type has 3 alleles in humans-A,B,and O. Any two alleles can be in offspring(from here pattern may be of complete, incomplete, or co-dominance). |
| What is the inheritance pattern of Pleiotropic like? | One allele of a gene influences more than one phenotype. Example:the color patterns of Siamese cats and their cross-eyes are both affected by the same allele on a gene. |
| What is the inheritance pattern of Polygenic like? | Traits are result of cumulative effect of genes(a trait is governed by many genes).Example:human skin pigmentation is affected by many genes which affect the amount of melanin produced (protein affecting skin pigmentation). |
