Biology Ch. 6 - Energy for Life
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| carotenoids | yellow or orange pigment that serves as an accessory to chlorophyll in photosynthesis |
| photosystems | photosynthetic unit in which solar energy is absorbed and high-energy electrons are generated; contains a pigment complex and an electron acceptor; occurs as a PS (photosystem) I and PS II |
| electron transport chain | passage of electrons along a series of electron carriers from a higher to lower energy levels; the energy released is used to synthesis ATP |
| ATP synthase | enzyme that is part of an ATP synthase complex and functions is the production of ATP in chloroplasts and mitochondria |
| coenzymes | nonprotein organic molecule that aids the action of an enzyme |
| RuBP carboxylase (rubisco) | enzyme required for CO2 fixation (atmospheric CO2 attached to RuBP) in the Cavil cycle |
| C3 photosynthesis | photosynthetic process where the first stable product of photosynthesis is a 3-carbon molecule |
| C4 photosynthesis | photosynthetic process where the plant fixes carbon dioxide to produce a C4 molecule that releases CO2 to the Calvin cycle |
| CAM photosynthesis | form of photosynthesis that is based on crassulacean-acid metabolism. a plant fixes CO2 at night to produce a C4 molecule that releases CO2 to the Calvin cycle during the day |
