What is Mendel's First Law? The Law of Segregation (alleles of genes separated during Meiosis (haploid gametes) and then came together when fertilized)
What is Mendel's Second Law? Genes assort independently (there are 2 possibilities in which homologous chromosomes can align during Metaphase 1; and not all genes of and offspring have to be from one parent)
Who was Gregor Mendel? An Austrian Monk (not scientist) who contributed to genetics after obtaining data from his experiments with pea plants
Why did Mendel use pea plants for his experiments? They were easy to cultivate (grow), they could be cross-bread easily (manipulated pollination), and they had easily observable traits
What inheritance pattern did all of the pea plants show? Dominant-Recessive Inheritance
What type of cross observes 1 trait? 2 traits? 1 trait= monohybrid 2=dihybrid
What theory did Mendel prove? What did he disprove? Particulate Theory=prove Blending Theory=disprove
What traits did Mendel observe in his pea plants? 1-Tall/Short 2-Constricted Pod/Inflated Pod 3-Flower Color (purple/white) 4-Yellow Pod/Green Pod 5-Green Seed/Yellow Seed 6-Wrinkled Seed/Smooth Seed 7-Flower Position (axil or terminal)
What are two different ways of calculating the traits of offspring? 1-Punnet Squares 2-Probability Calculations
What is used to show a pattern of inheritance of traits within a family? A pedigree
