What is Extracellular digestion? Digestion that takes place outside of the cell
What is Mycelium? The part of the fungus responsible for extracellular digestion and absorption of the digested food.
What is a Hypha? A filament of fungal cells
What is a Rhizoid hypha? A hypha that is imbedded in the material on which the fungus grows.
What is an Aerial hypha? A hypha that is not imbedded in the material upon which the fungus grows.
What is a Sporophore? Specialized aerial hypha that produces spores.
What is a Stolon? An aerial hypha that asexually reproduces to make more filaments.
What is a Haustorium? A hypha of a parasitic fungus that enters the host's cells, absorbing nutrition directly from the cytoplasm.
What is Chitin? A chemical that provides both toughness and flexibility.
What is Membrane? A thin covering of tissue.
What is Fermentation? The anerobic breakdown of sugars into smaller molecules.
What is a Zygospore? A zygote surrounded by a hard, protective covering.
What is a Zygote? The result of sexual reproduction when each parent contributes half of the DNA necessary for the offspring.
What is an antibiotic? A chemical secreted by a living organism that kills or reduces the reproduction rate of other organisms.
A mushroom is in its button stage. Has it released its spores yet? No.
What job does the fruiting body of a fungus perform? The fruiting body holds and releases the spores for reproduction.
A fungus produces haustoria. Is it saprophytic or parasitic? Parasitic.
