Describe Phylum Archeozoa 1. Lack mitochondria 2. move by flagella 3. transmitted by food/water 4. causes gastroenteritis
What is a cyst? Protective capsule - Resistance stages for some protozoa; metabolically inactive form; secretes a wall around themselves to prevent from drying out/heat; allows protozoa to survive outide of host
What are the Genus of Phylum Archeozoa? 1. Giardia 2. Trichomonas

What is the Genus of Phylum Euglenozoa? Trypanosoma
Describe Trypanosoma 1. looks like a fish 2. causes sleeping sickness 3. xferred thru arthropods 4. no cyst form 5. In africa, xferred by tsetse fly 6. in W. hemisphere/latin america, cause Chagas disease caused by kissing bug bite
What disease does Sarcodina cause? 1. amoebic dysentery (transmitted by food/water) 2. cyst in food/water causes bloody diarrhea
What is the Genus of Phylum Rhizopoda? Entamoeba
Describe Entamoeba 1. distinguished in fecal smear 2. see a nucleus that looks like a circle with a dot 3. when in Cyst form - has 4 nuclei
What is the Genus of Phylum Ciliophora? Balantidium
Describe Balantidium 1. looks like paramecium 2. hot dog shape nucleus 3. causes dysentery from contaminated water
What is Genus of Phylum Apicomplexa? Plasmodium
Describe Plasmodium causes malaria; ring, dark staining nucleus; comes in several diff forms caused by mosquito bite
What does Apicomplexa mean? Complex of the apex
What are Sporozoites? mosquito bite -> sporozoites go to liver -> undergoes schizogony, becomes merozoites -> goes into blood stream, infects red blood cells -> develop into ring stage - trophozoites -> red blood cell ruptures - develop gametocytes
