food web A community of organisms where there are several interrelated food chains
Photosynthesis Conversion of light energy from the sun into chemical energy.
cellular respiration Process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Energy the ability to do work
indicator chemicals that change their appearance in different types of solutions
Carbohydrates chains of smaller molecules call sugars
Protein chains of smaller molecules called amino acids
Fats chains of smaller molecules called fatty acids
Digestion Breaking down food
Decomposer An organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms
Homeostasis the ability of an organism to maintain constant internal conditions
Cellular Organization All living things are composed of one or more cells
Metabolism All of the chemical reactions that occur within an organism
Reproduction the production of offspring
Growth and Development increase in size and change shape
Response to stimuli React to changes in environment (temperature, humidity, light, gravity etc.)
Evolution The gradual change in a species over time
Producer An organism that can make its own food.
Consumer An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms
