Term | Definition |
---|---|
Photosynthesis | the process by which plants and other autotrophs capture and use light energy to make food from carbon dioxide and water |
cellular respiration | the process in which oxygen and glucose undergo a complex series of chemical reaction inside of cells releasing energy |
consumer | an organism that obtains energy by feeding off of other organsims |
producer | an organism that can make its own food |
Autotroph | an organism that is able to capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own food |
heterotroph | an organism that cannot make its own food and gets its food by consuming other organisms |
chloroplast | an organelle in the cells of plants and some other organisms that captures energy from sunlight and changes it to an energy form that cells can use in making food |
chlorophyll | a green photosynthetic pigment found in the chloroplasts of plants, algae, and some bacteria |
fermenation | The process in which cells release energy by breaking down food molecules without using oxygen |
mitochondria | rod-shaped organelles that convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its function |
stomata | a small opening on the underside of a leaf through which oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide can move |
Reactant | the input; a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction |
Product | the output; the substance produced at the end of the reaction |
Glucose | a simple sugar which is an important energy source in living organisms |
ATP | adenosine triphosate; provides energy to drive many processes in living cells |
