Friends of the Earth v. Laidlaw 2000 | Laidlaw discharged various pollutants into the N Tyger River; these discharges, particularly of mercury, an extremely toxic pollutant, repeatedly exceeded the limits set by the permit. FOE sues. Point is moot since they came into compliance during case. |
Massachusetts v EPA 2007 | 12 states want the EPA to regulate CO2 from cars under the Clean Air Act. EPA said it did not have authority. Ruling: Clean Air Act does allow for this. |
Rapanos v United States 2006 | Challenged federal jurisdiction to regulate wetlands under CWA. Rapanos was polluting into wetlands which emptied into navigable waterways (CWA jurisdiction). Ruling: connected wetlands are under CWA jurisdiction |
