Cells & Body Systems
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| organelle | a membrane-bound structure inside a cell that performs a specialized function |
| prokaryotic | a type of cell that does not have a nucleus. |
| eukaryotic | a type of cell that has a nucleus. |
| multicellular | an organism made up of more than one cell and is often made up of different types of cells |
| unicellular | an organism made up of one cell |
| cell | the basic structural and functional unit of living organisms |
| cell membrane | thin protective layer surrounding ALL cells. Allows water and other materials to pass through it. |
| cell wall | a tough, protective barrier that surrounds the outer membrane of some types of cells |
| nucleus | found only in eukaryotic cells. Contains all information for cells to live. Directs all activities. |
| DNA | the molecule that carries genetic information for the development and functioning of an organism. |
| mitochondria | Releases energy for use by cell. Found in both plant and animal cells. |
| chloroplast | Contains chlorophyll, which undergoes photosynthesis to make the sugar glucose, which is a form of energy. found in plant cells only. |
| vacuole | Storage facility. Can store water, waste, food, or other cell materials. In plant cells, the vacuole can be most the entire cell. |
| function | what something does |
| cytoplasm | the Jelly-like liquid that fills the inside of a cell. |
| specialized | having characteristics that allow specific functions to be performed |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) | Process and move materials around the cell. Rough ER has ribosomes, Smooth ER does not |
| Golgi Bodies | Sort proteins and other cell substances and packages them in vesicles. Delivers the vesicles within or out of the cell. |
| Ribosomes | Can be found in cytoplasm or on ER. Makes proteins. |
| Lysosomes | Contain enzymes that break down and recycle material. In Animal Cells |
