Scientific Method

TermDefinition
Observation Looking at something carefully or in order to gain information.
Inference An idea or conclusion that's drawn from evidence and reasoning.
QuaNtitative Observation Involves NUMBERS, or an amount. (2 text messages on your phone)
Qualitative Observation Expressed without numbers. The bike is blue, The grapes tastes sour.
Controlled Variable A variable that's held constant in a experiment
Hypothesis An educated guess. Includes an Independent and Dependent Variable. “If, then” statements
Independent Variable (I change) What I CHANGED (Gave vitamins to a baby cow)
Dependent Variable (Date) What you MEASURED (The weight of the cow)
Experiment Carefully - designed steps to test your hypothesis
Results Conclusions that are based on observations or facts.
Conclusion Information obtained to decide if the hypothesis was supported or not supported
Peer Review Colleagues examine experiment from an experimenter
