TermDefinition
Biology The Study of living things
Observations The act of paying careful attention to events, and recording the details.
Qualitative Observations describing an object made by our 5 senses.
Quantitative Numeric observations based on measurements and counting.
Interactions An action between two or more things that have an affect on each other.
Organism Any Living thing.
Field Study Collection of data outside of a laboratory setting
Population A group of the same kind of organism that live together in the same area.
Habitat An area that naturally supplies all the things an organism needs to survive. (Food, Shelter, Etc.)
Prey An animal that is hunted and killed by another for food.
Predator An animal that hunts and kill another animal for food.
Energy What living things require in order to "Do" anything, provided by food.
Food Substances that when eaten provide energy and building materials for organisms. Must contain protein, fat, or carbohydrates.
Carbohydrates Nutrient that is the main source of energy for an organism. There are two kinds; sugar and starch.
Protein Nutrient that is the main source of building materials for an organism.
Fat Nutrient used by organisms both as building materials and a way to store energy.
Indicator A chemical that changes color when exposed to certain substances.
Consumer An organism that needs to eat (consume) food to obtain their energy and building materials.
Producer An organism that is able to make its own food and building materials.
Photosynthesis The process where plants take energy from the sun and mix it with water and carbon dioxide to make food.
Food Chain A simple model that describes the order in which organisms depend on each other for food and energy.
Food Web A model that shows multiple interconnected food chains within an ecosystem.
Ecosystem A region or place where all living things are interconnected.
Native Species An organism that is normally found in a habitat.
Invasive Species An organism that enters a habitat where it does not normally live and harms the ecosystem.
Paraiste An organism that lives on or in another, getting its food directly from the other organism causing damage but not killing.
Host An organism that provides food and possibly shelter for a parasite.
External Structures A physical feature that is located on the outside of an organism designed to perform a specific function.
Internal Structures A physical feature that is located inside an organism designed to perform a specific function.
Stable Population A population that is increasing and decreasing with a pattern.
Biotic Factors All the living organisms that affect other organisms in an ecosystem.
Abiotic Factors All of the non-living factors in an environment that affect organisms in an ecosystem.
Biomagnification How pollutants will build up in organisms as you move up the food chain.
