Ch 1 Science Inquiry

QuestionAnswer
Peer Review Other scientists check your work
Independent Variable Variable or input the scientist "influencer" set to influence the outcome Ex) Hair growth vitamins
Dependent Variable Variable tied to results that "depends" on the influencer's inputs. Ex) How much your hair grew in a month
Controlled Variables Variables that the influencer must set but since they are the same between all subjects they will not have an influence on the outcome of the experiment. Ex) Everyone is the same age
Hypothesis A testable prediction, strong statement, not question, future tense. Ex) The hair growth vitamin will increase hair growth
Placebo A fake treatment for a human control group. Ex) Pill that looks the hair growth vitamin but doesn't actually have the hair growth vitamins in it
Control Group The group that is the basis of comparison. Ex) The other teens taking the fake, placebo vitamin pill
Experimental Group The group that receives the influencing treatment. Ex) Teens taking hair growth vitamin
Data Observations and measurements recorded from an experiment. The more data the more accurate. Ex) Hair measurements.
Science Literacy A basic understanding of science
Biology The study of the living environment
Scientific Method A stepwise procedure that scientists follow to test theories
Conclusion After an experiment, results are discussed, past tense Ex) The hair growth vitamin actually decreased teen hair growth.
Subjects Who/what you are testing on Ex) Human teens
Sample size How many subjects in the experiment. The more there are, the more data, the more accurate.
