intro to bio

TermDefinition
Science is limited by..? Ethics Technology Not considering entities (religion, supernatural)
The scientific method is used to? answer questions while testing hypothesis 6 steps
Step 1 of the scentific method Observation Goal: to gain valuable background information
Step 2 of the scentific method Question Goal: Develop a question that is the focus of the investigation EX: ‘What happens to a plant when it does not receive light?’
Step 3 of the scentific method Hypothesis An educated guess because of observation/research (step 1). EX: When a plant does not receive enough light, its growth is stunted.
Step 4 of the scentific method Prediction Formatted using IF-THEN statement. EX: ‘If a plant does not receive enough light, then its growth will be stunted.
Step 5 of the scentific method Experimentation Developing a method so you can test your prediction.
Step 6 of the scentific method Conclusion Accept or reject hypothesis based on experiment. Based on statistical analysis of data.
What is a independant variable Variable under direct control by the researcher EX: The amount of light a plant is exposed to.
What is a dependent variable May, or may not be influenced by the independent variable EX: the amount the plant grows
What are control variables? Variables that are not part of the study or experiment
biology is the study of..? Life
What are the 8 characteristics that qualify something as living Cellularity, reproduction, nutritionl requirements, growth, mutation, homeostasis, ability to respond to stimuli, adaptation
What are ecosystems Distinct geographical location, in which similar biota and abiotic conditions exist
What is a Community? All species of organisms living together within an ecosystem.
What is a Population A group of successfully interacting individuals of the same species
What is an Organism An individual organism
What is a system? Group of interacting organisms
What is a organ A structure comprised of a numerous tissues
What are tissues? Sheet/sheets of cells interacting /Working together, to achieve the functions of an organ
What is cellular? individual cells of an organism
What is chemical/molecular? Molecules and chemicals of cells
What is anatomy? the Study of is organs structure
What is physiology? Study of chemical interactions within a organisms body, focuses on function
what is cytology Study of cells
What is histology? Study of tissue
What is ecology? Study of the environment
Genetics? The study of DNA, heredity, and heretical variations
What is pathology? The study of disease
What is bio chemistry The study of organisms molecules and their roles
What is phycology The study of algae
What is mycology? The study of mold/fungus
what is taxonomy The science of naming and classifying organisms
What are the three domain classifications? Domain Archaea: ancient bacteria Domain Bacteria: bacteria found in all typical environments and includes pathogenic bacteria. Domain Eukara: all eukaryotic orgaisms
who Developed the kingdom system of classification Robert Whittaker in 1969
What classificatios do the Kingdom a system of classification include Kingdom Monera: includes all bacteria and cyanobacteria. Kingdom Protista: Protists including algae, slime molds, and protozoans. Kingdom Plantae: all plants Kingdom Fungi: Fungi include mushrooms, molds, and yeast. Kingdom Animalia: all animal
What is the basic idea of the theory of evolution? Natural selection: involves nature selecting who survives through genetics. This makes some people better genetically suited for survival. Individuals who cannot aid in furthering the species are systematically eliminated
