DIchotomous The division of material into 2 more or less equal parts.
Allele genes governing variations of the same character that occupy corresponding positions on homologous chromosomes or alternative forms of a gene.
Gene segment of DNA that serves as a unit of hereditary information. Includes a transcribable DNA sequence that yeilds a protein or RNA product with a specific function.
Locus The site a gene occupiers on the chromosome
Genotype genetic makeup of an individual
Phenotype Physical or chemical expression of an organisms gene
Dominant AN allele that is always expressed when it is present regardless of whether it is homozygous or heterozygous
Recessive an allele that is not expressed in the heterozygous state.
Homozgous Having a pair of identical alleles for a particualr locus
Heterozygous Having a pair of diffrent alleles for a particualr locus
Pleiotrophy The ability of a single gene to have muliple effects
Epistasis Condition in which certain alleles of one locus alter the expression of alleles of a diffrent locus
Polyploidy Multiple sets of chromosomes
Aneuploidy Abnormality caused by a single extra chromosome or the absence of a chromosome.
Gamete A sex cell
Zygote Produced from the union of 2 sex cells
Haploid One set of chromosomes per nucleus
Diploid Two sets of chromosomes per nucleus
Chromosome structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells
